National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force
Community Teachers Institute (CTI) is pleased to be a leading member of the National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force. The Collaborative is a broad-based coalition of education, policy, and community-serving organizations that share the following beliefs:
• Diversity and cultural competence are key factors in improving the quality of America's teacher workforce.
• Teachers of color must be actively recruited and supported.
• Barriers for candidates of color across the teacher development continuum must be identified and reduced.
• Institutional resources to meet the growing need for teachers of color must be increased.
• Highly qualified teachers must be equitably distributed, to ensure that urban students-often in high-poverty and high-minority schools-receive their fair share of the best and experienced teachers.
• All students benefit from diversity.
Quick Stats: Nationally, almost 90% of all teachers are white, while nearly 40% of all students are of color. By 2020, nearly half (45%) of children under the age of 18 will be from minority groups. Right now, nearly 40% of American public school students are children of color.
Today 20% of the children in public school are immigrants themselves or have parents who are immigrants, mostly from Asia and Latin America. More than 150 languages are spoken by our children in the public schools.
More than half of urban public school students do not graduate from high school. Urban youth are three times more likely to be unemployed and ten times more likely to be incarcerated than their suburban counterparts.
At the same time, urban communities in America are often resilient and brimming with untapped positive potential; these strengths need to be restructured systemically back into urban public education. When communities have been marginalized, as is the case for too many of our students of color, teachers of color can provide a much-needed resource as role models and authority figures. Beyond that, teachers of color can provide insights and socio-cultural experiences by which all students are enriched.
Collaborative Founding Partner Organizations: American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education; American Council on Education; Association of Teacher Educators; Community Teachers Institute; National Education Association; and Recruiting New Teachers, Inc.
